How to Choose Material of SS Railing Fittings?

Posted on December 14th, 2023

When choosing materials for stainless steel railing fittings, there are a few factors to consider. Here are some guidelines to help you make an informed decision:

1. Grade of stainless steel

Although not visible to the naked eye from SS railing fittings, the variance between different grades of stainless steel lies in its composition. As steel is naturally corrosive, different elements are added to make it stainless.

The industry standard for interior handrail use is a 304 grade stainless steel. In comparison 316 stainless steel contains 2% molybdenum to make the material more resistant to corrosion caused cracks, tension and pitting.

For outdoor use we normally recommend 316 grade stainless steel as the tougher composition gives better resistance in these harsh environments.

For swimming pools, coastal areas, Highco Metal can provide a wide range of SS railing fittings in 2205 grade.

2. Aesthetic considerations

SS railing fittings are also chosen based on their aesthetic appeal. Consider factors such as the desired finish (e.g., brushed, polished), shape, and design that will complement the overall architectural style or design theme of the space.

3. Strength and durability

Stainless steel railing fittings should be strong and durable to ensure the chosen stainless steel railing fittings have the necessary strength and load-bearing capacity to support the intended application. Factors such as the type of railing system, the expected weight or force applied to the fittings, and compliance with local building codes or regulations should be taken into account.

4. Maintenance and Cleaning

Stainless steel is known for its low maintenance requirements. It is generally easy to clean and resistant to staining. However, different finishes or grades of stainless steel may have varying maintenance needs. Consider the level of maintenance you are willing to undertake and choose a stainless steel grade or finish accordingly.

5. Budget

Stainless steel railing fittings can vary in price depending on the grade, finish, and complexity of the design. 304 stainless steel is generally more affordable than 316. Set a budget and consider the cost-effectiveness of the chosen fittings while still meeting your requirements for durability and aesthetics.

It is recommended to consult with professionals or suppliers specializing in stainless steel railing fittings to ensure you select the most suitable material for your specific project. They can provide guidance based on your specific needs and the local building codes or regulations that may apply.
